How to Make Spiced Pumpkin Chutney in Glass Jars
Autumn is here and with it comes crisp mornings, cosy jumpers, and, of course, pumpkins! While most of us think of pumpkins as the star of soups and pies, they also make a fantastic base for spiced chutneys. Sweet, tangy, and warmly aromatic, pumpkin chutney is the perfect way to preserve a little autumn flavour in a jar.
Whether you’re stocking up for winter, selling at markets, or creating homemade gifts, this recipe pairs perfectly with our range of glass preserving jars. Durable, reusable, and ideal for sealing in that seasonal goodness.

Ingredients
This recipe makes around 5 x 190ml jars of chutney.
1kg peeled and diced pumpkin (any edible variety)
2 medium onions, finely chopped
2 apples, peeled and chopped
250g light brown sugar
250ml cider vinegar
1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp chilli flakes (optional, for a little warmth)
½ tsp salt
Zest and juice of 1 orange
Method
1. Prepare your jars - Before you begin, sterilise your glass jars to keep your chutney fresh for longer. You can follow our step-by-step guide: How to Sterilise Jars for Jams and Preserves.
2. Cook the chutney - Add all ingredients to a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce to a simmer. Stir occasionally and cook for 45–60 minutes, or until the chutney thickens and the pumpkin is tender.
3. Check the consistency - The chutney should be glossy and jam-like — thick enough to mound on a spoon, but not dry. If it’s still a bit runny, cook for a few extra minutes with the lid off.
4. Jar and seal - While still hot, carefully ladle the chutney into your sterilised jars, leaving a small gap at the top. Wipe any spills, seal tightly with your lids, and allow to cool completely.
5. Let the flavours develop - Pumpkin chutney tastes even better after a few weeks of maturing — store it in a cool, dark place and try to resist opening it too soon!
